A sprinter runs a race in the amphora from the 500s BCE. Running was the premier event of the ancient Olympics – the only event in the first few games. The original race, the stadion, was about 180 meters, but events were added later that were longer sprints, along with races in full armor and a longer distance race of between 3,000 and 4,000 meters.
